I'm updating my Soap notes on the Genesis reading I caught up with.
S - Genesis 7-8
O - first thing that stood out to me was
2 Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate,
So I looked up the Study bible, and it said two of every unclean animal, for it to reproduce, but seven of every clean animal so it could reproduce and there would be some to be used as sacrifices.
I also find it interesting that God tells Noah in v4 what he's going to do with the flood and rain he's bringing in, whereas usually we have no idea what God's plan is for us, but to trust in him.
Also another thing - it seems that this was no ordinary flood. It was one of massive scale -
19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet.
24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.
I guess this is where Noah was kept in the dark, so to speak. God told him he would send the flood, but not how they would get out of it, except to remain in the ark.
Hence chapter 8
1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.
Noah sent out a raven and then the dove to check if the water had receded from the earth. Even when the dove came back with an olive leaf (background), he still waited until God called him to come out of the ark. This guy was really strictly obedient.
and when he did emerge from the ark,
20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. 21 The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. 22 "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease."
This just goes to show that we have the capacity to be completely obedient to God.
God took Noah out of the sinful environment and put him afresh in a new place (v4 - mountains of Ararat)
A/P - recurring theme of obedience/two ways to live
