Genesis 4

S - Genesis 4

I have some contextual notes from my trusty Kid's Adventure Bible (NIV) :)
Who wrote this book?
There is some debate; many scholars believe Moses wrote it.
Why was this book written?
Genesis tell how God created the universe and human beings. It also covers the special promises God made to Abraham.
What do we learn about God in this book?
God created all things. He loves people, but he will punish sin. God promises, however, to save peopl who trust him.
What people are important in this book?
Adam & Eve, Noah, Abraham & Sarah, Isaac & Rebekah, Jacob & Rachel, Joseph.
When did this happen?
No one knows when creation or the flood occurred. Abraham was born about 2150 BC. His great-grandson Joseph died about 1800 BC
Where did this happen?
Genesis 1-11 in Mesopotamia
Genesis 12-36 in Canaan, also called the promised land.
The rest of Genesis in Egypt
What are some of the stories in this book?
Gen 1 - God creates the universe
Gen 2 - God creates Adam and Eve
Gen 3 - Adam and Eve sin
Gen 6 - Noah builds an ark
Gen 7-8 - God sends a flood to punish sin
Genesis 12 - God gives promises to Abraham
Gen 18 - Abraham prays for a city
Gen 27 - Jacob steals Esau's blessing
Gen 32 - Jacob's name is changed
Gen 37 - Joseph's brothers sell him into slavery
Gen 39-41 - Joseph becomes a ruler

C/O - What has happened so far in the narrative? Have there been any major events, characters, or themes? Adam & Eve have sons Cain and Abel.
Themes - bringing the first fruits to the Lord, instead of slowly in the course of time (v3-5)
Cain killed Abel out of anger :O

v9 "Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
Somehow in Genesis, God keeps doing this whenever someone sins. Asks them a question first. Perhaps to see if they fear God and also for them to confess their sins and know their mistakes rather than just be told and punished.
However, again as in Genesis 3, God still protects the sinner. v15
Question: I don't get what's happening in v23-24.
Lamech sai dto his waives,
"Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me.
If Cain is avenged seven times,
then Lamech seventy-seven times."
- Will find out!
A - How does this passage challenge your understanding about who God is and what he is like?

Is there some attitude or behaviour you need to change?
Live for God. Seriously. First fruits are to God. Everything we do is by God's grace.

P - I pray that all this can be put into my life. It is a challenge as most of the time it is just talk and no action.
